Payment processor Stripe has begun its foray into the world of AI by announcing the acquisition of OpenRouter, an AI startup. The company is known for offering AI software for developers looking to develop new products. Specifically, OpenRouter offers China-sourced AI models that are a cheaper alternative to the US-based ones like OpenAI.
The details of the deal were not made public, but the New York Times estimates it to be worth about $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion being given to its founders. This comes a few months after OpenRouter, currently valued at $1.3 billion, raised $113 million in funding.
Managing AI Costs
On the surface, a payment processor like Stripe entering the AI space might seem like an odd match. But as the official blog post announcing the acquisition says, this is in a bid to make AI development and use more cost-efficient.
When AI models are used, the services behind them charge users in units called tokens. And as AI rapidly expands, developers are looking to have greater efficiency and flexibility in how they spend their tokens.

“We just want to make sure that moving between tokens and dollars is as seamless and safe as moving between dollars and euros. We’re at the beginning of this journey, but we think it’s going to be a big part of the future of Stripe,” said Will Gaybrick, President of Technology and Business at Stripe.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison echoed this sentiment, stating that the company wants to create better economic infrastructure around AI by helping businesses spend more effectively. Given that Stripe is one of the biggest payment processors in the world, worth $160 billion, it is uniquely equipped to establish this AI infrastructure within the wider marketplace.
The Future of AI
AI has proven in the last few years that it has a great deal of staying power, controversies aside. As more businesses are embracing various AI tools, developers have their work cut out for them, and a chance to get a piece of the pie.
If Stripe is able to achieve its goals with OpenRouter, they could do this while maximizing their spend. This development also shows the race to capture the AI development market, with models from Chinese labs such as DeepSeek clearly being able to compete on price.
And as the AI market is on track to grow significantly in the next few years, Stripe is looking to play a major role.
