Kard Financial, a New York-based rewards platform, has been acquired by Citibank in a bid to expand its consumer cards and commerce business. Citing the billions of transactions that Kard has processed so far, Citibank announced on August 13, 2026, that this new partnership will lead to more personalized and exclusive deals for its customers.

The current Kard setup relies on first-party transaction data and machine learning/AI that matches customers to the most relevant merchants. Operating since 2015, it has proven to be a hit among consumers, and now the company will have access to Citibank’s 200 million customers

The Future of Commerce

In the official press release, it was emphasized that Citibank is looking beyond immediate market share and focusing on positioning itself for the future of commerce as a whole.

“With this acquisition, we believe we can work with Kard to accelerate innovation and deliver more personalized experiences for customers while creating new opportunities for brands and merchants to reach, engage and reward consumers in more meaningful ways,” said Abhinav Anand, Citi’s Head of Value Cards, Lending and Commerce.

On Kard’s part, this development has been framed as a way to better serve its loyal customer base. While there was no public declaration of the worth of this deal, Citibank stated that it is not material to its financial results. Also, the transaction is subject to satisfaction of customary closing conditions, and until then, both companies will continue to operate as independent organizations

Kard has also declared that it processes over $10 billion in transactions per month, and it can be assumed that this number will rise should the acquisition go through.

Fintech and the Consumer Ecosystem

The rise of fintech solutions means customers are looking to gain even more value for their spending, as well as access modern features like digital cashback and discounts. At times, this creates a divide between modern fintech companies/neobanks and the more traditional banks that focus more on your typical banking services.

Rather than customers having to choose between the two, several developments are bridging the gap. First, many consumers simply use both traditional banks and modern fintech innovations. Second, banks like Citibank are partnering with and acquiring these fintech companies to ensure their customers do not lose out on any benefits and do not fall behind on modern expectations.

Needless to say, Citibank won’t be the last of such banks announcing fintech acquisitions.
